Red Sea turmoil impacting NZ shipments

A cargo ship sinking

The ongoing turmoil in the Red Sea is casting a long shadow over New Zealand's supply chains, with concerns mounting as the peak import season approaches. NZ importers and exporters are being advised to plan and consider advancing orders.

Latest: Red Sea turmoil impacting NZ shipments ahead of peak import season

Container shipping giant Maersk has issued a warning to New Zealand importers and exporters about potential supply chain disruptions ahead of the peak import season. The ongoing turmoil in the Red Sea, marked by increased security risks, has forced vessel diversions and is driving up costs.

As a result of the situation, Maersk is urging Kiwi businesses to plan ahead and consider bringing forward their orders. The shipping line has implemented measures to mitigate the impact, but delays are expected.

The Red Sea is a crucial trade route for goods travelling between Asia and Europe, with Oceania trade heavily reliant on this corridor. The increased risk has led to higher insurance premiums, which will ultimately be reflected in freight rates.

Importers and exporters are advised to closely monitor the situation and maintain open communication with their shipping providers.
