Cargo Tetris: Understanding shipping container capacity

A cargo ship sinking

Unsure how much fits in a shipping container? There are key factors that influence how much you can fit in a shipping container, from container size and cargo type to weight limitations and packing strategies. If your cargo container is not filled to capacity, there is also the option of consolidation.

The amount you can fit in a shipping container depends on several factors, including:

Container size

The two most common sizes are:

20-foot container: This holds roughly 1,160 cubic feet (33 cubic meters) of cargo and has a weight limit of approximately 58,000 pounds (26,700 kg).

40-foot container: This offers almost double the space, with 2,376 cubic feet (67 cubic meters) and a weight limit of around 64,000 pounds (29,000 kg).

Cargo type

Density: Dense cargo like machinery or metal will weigh more and fill the container faster than lighter items like furniture or clothing.

Shape and stackability: Awkwardly shaped items or those that don't stack well will utilise less space efficiently.

Packaging: Bulk packaging takes up more space than tightly packed boxes or items secured on pallets.

Weight limitations

Even if you haven't filled the container by volume, you need to stay within the weight limit for safety and transport regulations. Exceeding the limit can result in fines and delays.

Additional factors

Lashing and securing: Leaving space to properly secure your cargo for safe transport will eat into available space.

Customs inspections: Depending on the contents and destination, customs inspections might require temporary access, further impacting the usable space.

There are online resources to help you estimate how much you can fit in a container, however, they will be estimations and are to be used as a guide only.

It's crucial to consult with a professional freight forwarder who can consider all the factors specific to your cargo and provide an accurate assessment. They can also advise on consolidation options if your shipment doesn't fill a container.
